Who is a Yoga Guru?

There is an old story which illustrates the beautiful bond between Guru and his disciple. One day the sage Kapil was in deep meditation. In his meditation, he had a vision of his guru and God himself walking towards him. He knew he had to bow down but didn’t know to whom he should show his respect and love first. In the end he decided to bow to the feet of his Guru first. Thanks to Guru, he found God. Without Guru, he would have never experienced the Divine.

As you might know, the word guru comes from two Sanskrit words, Gu meaning darkness and Ru means dispeller or remover. Therefore the literal meaning of the word Guru is „the one who dispels darkness“. Beautiful, isn’t it?

In yoga, when you come to asana practice or meditation, Yoga Guru is your teacher. Of course not every teacher will be the right one for you. But never fall into judgement and criticism. All human beings you meet on your path are your teachers. All interactions happen for a reason so be aware and find that reason!

Guru is a spiritual leader, teacher, sage, counsellor, guiding light. Guru is the one who does not have any expectation of you but is always happy to help you, guide you and show you the right way of life. Guru is God, Guru is your father, your mother, Guru is the one who always brings you out from difficulties reminds you of the right way. Guru is the guide on every spiritual path. Guru gives peace and happiness“, says Kriti Kharki of Mandala Studio Yoga & Spa, my Guru.

If you have a spiritual longing or feel an emptiness in your life, if you are searching for the next right thing in your life, maybe this is the call for you. Who knows, maybe your Guru is waiting for you in Nepal, like in my case. For me it took one class with Kriti and I knew something very special happened on the yoga mat. Now, almost three years later, I am still coming back on regular basis; and this time for the Yoga Teacher Training with Kriti and Dipendra.

These two teachers dedicated their lives to sharing their joy of yoga – and for that I am so enormously grateful. I highly recommend you sign up for this training while there is a chance. If you are a seeking soul, if you are a student hungry for knowledge, for yoga and for Truth, if you are searching for an intense but personal and honest yoga teacher training or any yoga experience, this is it. See you in Nepal!
